Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level names remained running.
