Data corruption is the damage of information caused by various hardware or software problems. Once a file gets damaged, it will no longer work as it should, so an app will not start or shall give errors, a text file can be partially or fully unreadable, an archive file will be impossible to open and unpack, etc. Silent data corruption is the process of information getting harmed without any identification by the system or an admin, which makes it a significant problem for website hosting servers as fails are more likely to occur on larger in size hard drives where significant volumes of information are placed. When a drive is a part of a RAID and the info on it is duplicated on other drives for redundancy, it's very likely that the bad file will be treated as a regular one and it will be copied on all the drives, making the damage permanent. A lot of the file systems that run on web servers these days often cannot identify corrupted files instantly or they need time-consuming system checks during which the server isn't working.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Web Hosting
We have tackled the issue of silent data corruption on all our web hosting
servers by using the state-of-the-art Z file system, or ZFS. The latter is superior to other file systems because it is the only one on the market which checks all files in real time by using a checksum - a digital identifier that's unique for each and every file. When you upload content to your account, it will be stored on several SSD drives and continually synchronized between them for redundancy. ZFS regularly analyzes the checksum of all files and if any file is detected as damaged, it is replaced immediately with a good copy from another disk. As this happens in real time, there's no risk that a bad file may remain or may be duplicated on the other SSDs. ZFS requires plenty of physical memory in order to carry out the real-time checks and the benefit of our cloud hosting platform is that we work with multiple powerful servers working together. In case you host your Internet sites with us, your info will be intact no matter what.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Servers
In case you go for one of our semi-dedicated server
packages, you won't have to be concerned about silent data corruption because we use ZFS - a high level file system that checks all files in real time. Every time you upload a file to your website hosting account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. This file will be synchronized between a couple of SSD drives for redundancy, so if a drive fails, the other ones will take over. ZFS compares the checksum of all copies on the different drives and if it detects a damaged copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from a different drive. This happens in real time, so there will be no danger for any part of your content at any moment. In comparison, all of the other file systems perform checks only after a system malfunction, but since they do not use anything similar to the checksums that ZFS uses, they won't detect silently corrupted files, so a corrupted copy can be replicated on the remaining drives as well and you can lose important info. Since this isn't the case with ZFS, we can warrant the integrity of each and every file you upload no matter what.
